Teesside, UK – September 15, 2021: Brent Alpha oil and gas platform being dismantled on Teesside, England, UK.

Teesside is a finalist to host a new £1.3 billion Small Modular Reactors (SMR) factory, potentially creating 4,000 jobs. Holtec Britain shortlisted Teesside among four potential sites to build up to four SMRs annually, aiding the UK’s net zero goals and nuclear capacity target of 24GW by 2050. The factory would generate 3,600 construction jobs and 400 operational roles if selected, contributing £100 million annually to the local economy.

Tees Valley Mayor Ben Houchen has backed Teesside’s bid strongly, highlighting the region’s robust engineering expertise and excellent transport links. Teesside’s past involvement in SMR projects with industry giants like Rolls Royce and Westinghouse further bolsters the bid’s credibility.

The final decision will be made later this year. Great British Nuclear has already shortlisted Holtec’s technology and is undergoing assessment by the Office for Nuclear Regulation. This project is expected to significantly boost the local economy and position Teesside as a leader in clean energy technology.
