Green Lithium has announced its partnership with EDF’s Tees Green Hydrogen project to supply hydrogen for its large-scale lithium refinery at PD Ports in Teesside, UK. This initiative aims to reduce the carbon footprint of lithium refining, which is currently dominated by fossil fuel use, by replacing it with green hydrogen. This change could cut emissions by 75% compared to non-UK refineries.
The Teesside refinery, a beacon of sustainable industrial innovation, will churn out over 50,000 tonnes of low-carbon, battery-grade lithium chemicals annually. This substantial output will be pivotal in supporting the production of over 1 million EVs in Europe. The project, backed by EDF Renewables UK and Hynamics, is set to receive funding from the UK Government’s Net Zero Hydrogen Fund. Beyond its environmental benefits, the initiative will bolster local industry and transport by curbing industrial pollution and enhancing sustainability.
