Green Lithium has announced its partnership with EDF’s Tees Green Hydrogen project to supply hydrogen for its large-scale lithium refinery at PD Ports in Teesside, UK. This initiative aims to reduce the carbon footprint of lithium refining, which is currently dominated by fossil fuel use, by replacing it with green hydrogen. This change could cut emissions by 75% compared to non-UK refineries.
The Teesside refinery, a beacon of sustainable industrial innovation, will churn out over 50,000 tonnes of low-carbon, battery-grade lithium chemicals annually. This substantial output will be pivotal in supporting the production of over 1 million EVs in Europe. The project, backed by EDF Renewables UK and Hynamics, is set to receive funding from the UK Government’s Net Zero Hydrogen Fund. Beyond its environmental benefits, the initiative will bolster local industry and transport by curbing industrial pollution and enhancing sustainability.
This partnership is a collaboration and a strategic move in line with the UK Government’s Critical Minerals Strategy. This strategy underscores the importance of securing a stable and sustainable lithium supply. By harnessing the power of green hydrogen, Green Lithium and EDF are making significant contributions to the decarbonisation of the battery and EV supply chains. This project is about environmental benefits and positioning Teesside as a leading hub for green industrial innovation. It is a testament to the region’s potential to drive significant environmental and economic benefits, paving the way for a greener future for the UK and Europe.
