Teesside’s Latest Renewable Energy Project: Teesworks Gigapark

Teesside is poised to become a central hub for renewable energy with the upcoming development of the Teesworks Gigapark, a project led by Natpower UK. This initiative, announced in June 2024, aims to build Europe’s largest battery storage facility on the Teesworks site, with over 60 gigawatt hours (GWh) by 2040.

The Teesworks Gigapark will enable the storage of energy generated from renewable sources such as wind and solar, ensuring a steady supply of green energy even when these sources are not actively generating power. This project is a significant component of Teesside’s broader strategy to lead the UK’s green industrial revolution. It will complement other renewable energy projects in the area, including the HyGreen Teesside and H2 Teesside hydrogen production facilities.
The development of the Teesworks Gigapark is expected to create numerous jobs and attract further investment into the region. It also underscores Teesside’s commitment to achieving Net Zero emissions and supporting the UK’s overall decarbonisation goals. Local leaders, including Tees Valley Mayor Ben Houchen, have highlighted the project’s potential to drive economic growth and establish Teesside as a critical player in the global green energy market.

The public learned more about this ambitious project at an exhibition held on June 26, 2024, where details about the facility and its benefits were shared.

This initiative marks a significant step forward for Teesside, showcasing the region’s dedication to sustainability and innovation in renewable energy. It’s a moment of pride for all of us as we witness Teesside’s rise as a central hub for renewable energy.
